Merchants Metals has 650 employees in 41 locations across the United States, with nearly half having no company email address or do not work at a desk. Communication has been heavily reliant on paper and dependent on managers and supervisors cascading news and information down to front-line workers.
Covid-19 has particularly highlighted the need for real-time, direct reach out to ensure instructions and advisories land in a timely manner and are not delayed or diluted.
The company is also keen to better serve its Spanish speakers, to appeal to multi-generations of talent and attract them into the business, and to ensure health and safety stays paramount in day-to-day operations.
The Engage app will open up a world of modern, social media style communications, with personalised newsfeeds for employees, plus secure group messaging and push notifications straight to individuals’ smartphones. It will also serve as a new mobile intranet, giving instant access to key resources, information and contacts. The Spanish speakers, and those who are bilingual but more comfortable with Spanish will automatically get the Spanish language versions of any app-based content.
Commenting on the project Andrea Hogan, CEO said: “We have incredible colleagues across the nation who contribute every day in the context of traditional, and all too often, one-way communication. With Engage, we will reach, support, and hear each other, in real time, wherever we are.
"Up to now, we’ve been pushing paper and having to rely on managers cascading things down to the frontline; Engage allows us to share the same information with everyone at the same time as well as advise, alert and converse with anyone, anywhere, whether that’s on a one-to-many, one-to-one or group chat basis.
"The social media set up ensures instant familiarity to users so the training requirement is minimal; it allows us to use all sorts of content types including video to maximise engagement; and it also creates our own social network within the business - it’s not just top-down communication any more, but connections and relationships being made right across the company. Add in the mobile intranet capability as well as the wider potential to enhance customer engagement through one unified platform and we are looking at something truly transformative for Merchants Metals.”
ESG’s CEO Phil Wedgwood added: “This is a good example of what we are seeing more generally in the market. Deals might have had their roots in pre-Covid times, but the pandemic certainly accelerated digital strategies - organisations want to be faster, smarter, more efficient, supportive and responsive; they want to enable, empower, engage, both on the colleague and the customer front. We are absolutely delighted to have such a well-respected name join the Engage family and further boost our credentials as a global engagement specialist.”
